A total of 15 teams work on projects for government agencies, banking, mobile services and the Internet Of Things (IoT) technology. These include many kinds of payment cards, SIM cards, travel passes, secure eBanking devices, authentication tokens, machine identification modules (MIM), and secure ID documents including ePassports, eID and eHealth cards, as well as eDriving licenses. As a Software Configuration Management Engineer at (COMPANY NAME) for Banking and Payment Services R&D software development, your primary responsibility is to manage the configuration, version control and release of software products.
A Week in the Life of a CMO: Your week as a CMO in an R&D software development organization may include the following activities:
- Strategic Planning and Meetings: Engaging in strategic planning sessions with stakeholders to align configuration management with development objectives. Attending meetings with development teams to discuss ongoing projects and address configuration-related issues.
- Configuration Management Implementation: Working on developing and implementing configuration management plans and processes. Setting up version control systems and workflows, defining change management practices, and establishing release management protocols.
- Auditing and Compliance: Conducting configuration audits to ensure compliance with established standards and policies. Identifying discrepancies and implementing corrective measures to maintain a stable and controlled development environment.
- Collaboration and Communication: Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including development, testing, and infrastructure teams, to facilitate effective communication and coordination in configuration management activities. Participating in team meetings and providing guidance on configuration-related matters.
- Automation and Tooling: Collaborating with software development and infrastructure teams to automate build and deployment processes. Assessing and implementing tools and scripts to streamline configuration management tasks and enhance productivity.
- Documentation Management: Overseeing the organization and control of software development documentation. Reviewing and updating documentation, including design documents, release notes, and change logs.
- Continuous Improvement: Evaluating current configuration management practices and identifying areas for improvement. Researching industry best practices and exploring new tools and technologies to enhance configuration management processes.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience: To excel as a CMO for R&D software development, you should possess the following knowledge, skills, and experience:
- Configuration Management Expertise: Strong understanding of configuration management practices, including version control, change management, release management, and auditing.
- Software Development Background: Familiarity with software development methodologies and processes. Experience working with programming languages and development tools commonly used in the organization.
- Operating Systems Knowledge: Proficient in managing Windows, Linux, and macOS systems. Understanding system administration tasks and commands specific to each operating system.
- Containerization with Docker: In-depth knowledge and experience in working with Docker. Understanding the concepts of containerization, Docker architecture, and container lifecycle management.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in tools and technologies used for configuration management, such as Git, Mercurial, Jenkins, and automation scripting languages, including those specific to Docker and container management.
