Catastrophe Analyst
Posting Description:
**Catastrophe Analyst**
This role is part of Aons Impact Forecasting team, a team of scientists, developers and client services colleagues together developing and supporting catastrophe models for various perils including flood, windstorm, earthquake, wildfire or terrorism.
The role primarily focuses on catastrophe model development, combining meteorological hazard from extreme weather (winter storms, summer storms, freeze, etc), geoscience and vulnerability engineering of buildings! The vulnerability component of catastrophe models predicts extent of damage caused by particular events, and so converts a hazard metric such as a wind gust into an estimated monetary loss.
**What the day will look like**
- Gather and process insured loss data from clients to analyse the vulnerability of property and motor to natural hazards such as wind gust or hail.
- Assist on the technical development of catastrophe modelling solutions with a focus on engineering and vulnerability components.
- Coordinate and eventually lead R&D projects within the team exploring the testing and development of ideas to improve existing models.
- Communicate with various parties involved in the project, including academic partners, team members in different offices and clients.
- Represent the company at commercial, academic and marketing events.
**Skills and experience that will lead to success**
- Technical thinking, ability to quickly learn new things and concepts.
- Proficient communication skills in English.
- Analytical skills with knowledge of statistical methods for data analysis.
- Functional knowledge of scripting or programming languages (R, MATLAB, Python, or others) and basic knowledge of SQL or other relational database tools. Knowledge of GIS is also a plus.
- Willingness to travel as well as to present your work.
- The ability to work in Prague is essential. There is some flexibility with working from home within Czechia, but this is primarily an office-based position.
- Experience studying the vulnerability of buildings or vehicles to impacts and physical loading as well as experience working in catastrophe modelling or structural engineering and building vulnerability would be well suited to the role.
- Experience working with machine learning or related topics is an advantage.
